Daily Show Makes (Archived) History

For fans who may have not heard the news, Jon Stewart extended his contract to 2011, and Comedy Central now offers archived access to past episodes of The Daily Show.....Another example of how creative content is making its way to consumers for less and less cost. TBS is another example of a station that allows users to watch past episodes of sitcoms.

NBC Live & DIRECT

So, the pricing dispute between Apple and NBC has finally led to this. It may seem like a great solution to the issue for NBC, but the capabilities of the new program seem limited. In related news, Virgin has dropped its downloading service. One big reason was that their service was not compatible with iPods and its Digital Rights Management configurations. Are these signs from consumers that the iTunes store is preferred over other mediums? Will NBC suffer the same fate in a few years since their new system has comparable limitations? For more in this area, check out the similar BBC media player, which was released about a month ago. -G.

My Name is Prince / and I am funky.

"Music industry icon Prince is picking a fight with YouTube over unauthorized use of video content on the video-sharing Web site." I found this recent article about a possible lawsuit coming down regarding copyrighted material being posted to YouTube. If it goes forward, it should be telling toward setting obligations for similar sites. We'll stay posted...

To Block or Not To Block...

The Morality of Blocking Ads

Can the add-on to the Firefox browser that easily eliminates almost all ads on a Web site – have the “potential for extreme menace to the online-advertising business model?”

Google haps....

......for those keeping track!

"
To the victor belong the spoils — and the lawsuits. With its $150 billion market cap, Google has become a prime target of the litigious, and we're not just talking about Viacom's billion-dollar YouTube assault. Claiming everything from patent, trademark, and copyright infringement to fraud, dozens of companies have decided that the time is right to cash in by hitting Google with a barrage of lawsuits. Do any have a case? You be the judge."

Jing Project

Hey everyone,

Came across this new media grabbing software. With these types of software being developed more and more, the increasing ease for users may open up some interesting issues within copyright. Will users obtain copyright permissions when grabbing media for their own website (that makes a profit)? Is there an easy method for users to determine what is protected from use and what is not? Does anybody know anything about Ruby?

Kanye West Stronger Video(High Quality)

Check out Kanye's latest video...a play on the anime classic 'Akira'. Also, I thought it was interesting that what he's essentially doing is creating the "mashup" before other artists create the mashup of his song (reversing the order of how mashups are typically released). I define this as a mashup, because it takes two unassociated musical genres and molds them into a derivative work. This song was written with Daft Punk (who released the original song sampled in 2001) and might help redefine how music will be created in years to come. G.-

Student Organizational Fair

It was great to meet all of you folks that visited our table today. At the same time, I had an excellent opportunity to talk with some other groups about possible co-op events. This year looks promising, and I can't wait to get it rolling. If anyone has any ideas for events or for the group in general, please just post a comment, shoot me an email or catch me in the hall sometime. G.-
